The symptom
Troubleshooting
Roku
The Roku shows error 009 or 'Not connected to the internet', drops off Wi-Fi overnight, or needs a restart every day to get back online.
The likely causes
Work from the top — the list runs from most common to least common.
- A router channel that conflicts with Roku's preferred bands
- The router's band-steering confusing the Roku
- A corrupted network profile on the Roku
- Weak signal at the TV's location
- Router firmware or DNS issues
The fixes, in order
-
Restart the Roku and the router
Settings > System > Power > System restart on the Roku, and unplug the router for 30 seconds. Test before changing anything — this fixes a large share of cases.
-
Run the Roku connection check
Settings > Network > Check connection. Roku reports wireless signal strength and internet speed. 'Poor' signal means the problem is physical distance or interference, not settings.
-
Reset the network connection on the Roku
Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Network connection reset. The Roku forgets all networks and restarts; rejoin your Wi-Fi fresh. This clears corrupted profiles that cause daily dropouts.
-
Lock the router to a friendly channel
In your router's settings, set the 2.4 GHz band to channel 1, 6, or 11 (not 'Auto'), and set 5 GHz to a channel below 50 — Roku devices can't see DFS channels (52-140) that routers sometimes auto-select.
-
Separate the bands
If the router broadcasts one name for both bands, rename the 5 GHz network and connect the Roku to the band that makes sense: 5 GHz if the router is nearby, 2.4 GHz if it's far.
-
Wire it if you can
The Roku Ultra has Ethernet built in. A wired Roku never has Wi-Fi problems — if the router is anywhere near the TV, this ends the issue permanently.
When to contact the manufacturer
If the Roku can't hold a connection even next to the router — and a phone hotspot test fails too — its Wi-Fi radio may have failed. Contact Roku support with your model and serial number (Settings > System > About).
Official support: Roku's official support site. FoxStream publishes guides and is not an official support channel for Roku.
Worth knowing
- The phone hotspot test separates 'Roku problem' from 'router problem' in two minutes.
- Roku TVs have the same network settings under Settings > Network.
Common mistakes
- Re-entering the Wi-Fi password repeatedly when the profile is corrupted — do the network reset instead.
- Leaving the router on auto channel when DFS channels are in play.
