Setup Guide
Roku
Roku voice remotes talk to the player over a private wireless connection, not infrared — which is why they work through cabinet doors, and also why they occasionally need re-pairing after a battery change or power outage.
What you'll need
- The Roku voice remote with fresh batteries
- The Roku player or Roku TV powered on
- The standard Roku remote or the Roku mobile app (only if the voice remote is fully unpaired and you need to navigate menus)
The steps
-
Restart the Roku
Unplug the Roku player from power for ten seconds, then plug it back in. Pairing works most reliably within the first few minutes after a restart.
-
Put fresh batteries in the remote
Weak batteries cause most pairing failures. For the rechargeable Voice Remote Pro, charge it for at least thirty minutes first.
-
Enter pairing mode
Open the battery compartment and press and hold the small pairing button for five seconds. The status light starts flashing green. On the Voice Remote Pro (rechargeable), the button is on the back.
-
Wait near the Roku
Keep the remote within a few feet of the player. A pairing dialog appears on screen, and the remote connects within about thirty seconds.
-
Confirm voice control works
Press and hold the microphone button and say 'Launch Netflix'. If the app opens, pairing is complete. Set up TV power and volume under Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes > Set up remote for TV control.
Worth knowing
- The Roku mobile app doubles as a full remote — install it before you need it.
- One voice remote per Roku: pairing a new remote unpairs the old one on most models.
- Label remotes if you have several Rokus; they pair to the player, not the household.
Common mistakes
- Trying to pair while the Roku has been idle for hours — restart it first.
- Holding the pairing button for two seconds instead of five.
- Assuming a dead remote is broken when the batteries were installed backwards.
