The SHIELD TV Pro is the most capable Android TV box still sold: 4K Dolby Vision, AI upscaling, USB 3.0 ports, and a built-in Plex Media Server. The initial setup is standard Android TV; the interesting part is the SHIELD-specific tuning that follows.

What you'll need

  • The SHIELD TV Pro, power supply and an HDMI cable
  • A Google account
  • An NVIDIA account (needed for GeForce NOW and AI upscaling features)
  • Ethernet cable recommended

The steps

  1. Wire it up

Connect HDMI to your TV or AV receiver, plug in Ethernet if available, then connect power. The SHIELD boots to a language screen.

  2. Pair the remote

The triangular remote pairs over Bluetooth automatically. If it doesn't, hold it near the box and press and hold the Select button until the LED flashes.

  3. Sign in with your Google account

Use your phone when offered — it's faster than the on-screen keyboard. This installs your purchased apps and syncs your Google TV profile.

  4. Sign in to your NVIDIA account

Open the NVIDIA Games app or Settings > SHIELD account and sign in. This unlocks GeForce NOW, GameStream features and account-based settings.

  5. Set the display mode

Go to Settings > Device Preferences > Display & Sound > Resolution. Choose 4K 59.94 Hz with Dolby Vision if your TV supports it, and enable 'Match content color space'.

  6. Turn on AI upscaling

In Settings > Device Preferences > Display & Sound > AI Upscaling, pick Enhanced or Demo mode to compare. It sharpens 1080p streams noticeably on 4K TVs.

  7. Optional: enable the Plex Media Server

Open Plex, choose 'Set up Plex Media Server', and attach a USB drive if you want local storage. The Pro's USB 3.0 ports are why people buy it over the tube model.

Worth knowing

  • The backlit remote buttons light up when you pick it up — battery life is still months long.
  • Set the power button on the remote to control TV power via HDMI-CEC under Settings > Device Preferences > HDMI CEC.
  • Game controllers pair over Bluetooth from Settings > Remotes & accessories.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving AI upscaling off and wondering what the fuss was about.
  • Using Wi-Fi when the router is in the same room — Ethernet is more stable for Plex transcoding.
  • Skipping the NVIDIA account sign-in and missing GeForce NOW entirely.
