If you own an iPhone, setting up an Apple TV 4K takes less time than making coffee. The phone hands over your Wi-Fi password, region, and Apple Account automatically — no on-screen keyboard required.

What you'll need

  • An iPhone or iPad running a recent iOS or iPadOS
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on for the iPhone
  • Your Apple Account (Apple ID) signed in on the iPhone
  • The Apple TV 4K, its power cord and an HDMI cable

The steps

  1. Connect the hardware

Plug the Apple TV 4K into power and connect it to your TV with an HDMI cable. For the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model, run an Ethernet cable to your router now if you want wired networking — it's the most reliable option.

  2. Select the correct TV input

Switch the TV to the HDMI input you used. The Apple TV setup screen appears with a language prompt.

  3. Bring your iPhone close

Wake your iPhone and hold it near the Apple TV. A card pops up on the phone offering to set up the Apple TV. Tap Continue.

  4. Transfer your settings

The iPhone transfers your Wi-Fi credentials, Apple Account, region and language. Confirm the prompts on the phone; you may be asked to sign in with Face ID or your passcode.

  5. Choose room and Siri settings

Pick the room the Apple TV lives in (used by the Home app), decide whether to enable Siri, and choose your screen saver preferences. Aerial screen savers download in the background.

  6. Opt in or out of analytics

Choose whether to share diagnostics with Apple and app developers. Either choice works; this only affects anonymous usage data.

  7. Open the App Store and add your services

On the Home Screen, open the App Store and install your streaming apps. Many apps offer 'Sign in on iPhone' so you never type passwords with the remote.

Worth knowing

  • The Siri Remote charges over USB-C — top it up during setup if it sat in a warehouse.
  • Turn on 'One Home Screen' in Settings > Users and Accounts to sync the app layout across multiple Apple TVs.
  • Hold the TV button to open Control Center, where audio output (like AirPods) is one tap away.

Common mistakes

  • Using the iPad/iPhone that's signed into a different Apple Account than the one you want on the TV.
  • Forgetting Bluetooth — the proximity setup needs it on.
  • Buying a separate HDMI 2.1 cable thinking the box includes one; it doesn't, but any good high-speed HDMI cable works.
