The symptom

A system update stuck at the same percentage for a long time, an 'update failed' message, or a device that restarts repeatedly during updating.

The likely causes

Work from the top — the list runs from most common to least common.

  1. A slow or unstable internet connection during the download
  2. Power blips during the install
  3. Insufficient storage for the update package
  4. A corrupted download that needs a fresh attempt
  5. A server-side issue on the manufacturer's side

The fixes, in order

  1. Wait longer than feels reasonable

Large updates on slow connections can sit at one percentage for 30-45 minutes while downloading. If the device is warm and the light blinks occasionally, give it time before touching anything.

  2. Check your internet

If truly frozen, test whether your network is up on another device. An update that lost its connection mid-download will never finish on its own.

  3. Restart and retry

If the screen allows it, back out and run the update again from Settings. If the device is unresponsive, unplug it for 60 seconds, plug it back in, and let it boot — most devices either resume or roll back safely.

  4. Free up storage

If the update fails with a storage message, delete unused apps and retry. Updates need working room beyond their download size.

  5. Try a different network

Connect the device to a phone hotspot and retry the update. This rules out router filtering and captive-portal issues blocking the manufacturer's servers.

  6. Factory reset only when the device is usable

If the device boots but can't update, a factory reset followed by a fresh update usually succeeds. If the device won't boot at all (stuck on logo), don't reset — contact support.

When to contact the manufacturer

A device stuck in a boot loop after an update — never reaching the home screen — needs the manufacturer's recovery process. Each brand has one (Roku's factory reset button, Fire TV's recovery mode, Apple's restore through a computer for Apple TV). Contact their official support for the exact steps for your model.

FoxStream publishes guides and is not an official support channel for any brand — always use the manufacturer's official support site or the number printed in your device's documentation.

Worth knowing

  • Update when you don't need the TV for an hour, not before movie night.
  • Keep the device on wall power during updates.

Common mistakes

  • Unplugging mid-install because the percentage looked frozen.
  • Factory resetting a device that won't even boot — that removes the recovery options support would have used.
