The symptom

The streaming remote no longer powers the TV on or off, volume buttons stopped controlling the soundbar, or devices randomly switch inputs by themselves.

The likely causes

Work from the top — the list runs from most common to least common.

  1. HDMI-CEC is disabled on the TV (every brand names it differently)
  2. CEC is off on the soundbar, receiver, or streaming device
  3. An HDMI adapter, switch, or extender is blocking the CEC signal
  4. A power outage left the CEC handshake stuck
  5. One misbehaving device confusing the whole chain

The fixes, in order

  1. Find and enable CEC on the TV

Samsung: Settings > General > External Device Manager > Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC). LG: Settings > General > Devices > HDMI Settings > SimpLink. Sony: Settings > External Inputs > BRAVIA Sync. TCL/Hisense Roku or Google TVs: Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC). Vizio: Settings > System > CEC. Turn it on.

  2. Enable CEC on the streaming device

Roku: Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC) — check '1-touch play'. Fire TV: Settings > Display & Sounds > HDMI CEC Device Control. Apple TV: Settings > Remotes and Devices > Control TVs and Receivers. Google TV devices enable it under Settings > Display & Sound > HDMI CEC.

  3. Enable CEC on the soundbar or receiver

Check the audio device's own settings menu for 'HDMI Control', 'CEC', or 'ARC setup' and turn it on. Soundbars with only a remote and no screen usually have a button combination listed in the manual.

  4. Power-cycle the whole chain

Unplug the TV, soundbar and streaming device from power for 60 seconds. Plug in the TV first, then the soundbar, then the streaming device. CEC tables rebuild on power-up, and this order teaches them correctly.

  5. Remove adapters from the path

HDMI switches, splitters, capture cards and some cheap extenders block CEC. Connect the device directly to the TV while testing.

  6. Isolate a misbehaving device

If inputs change by themselves ('the TV switches to the game console at random'), one device is shouting on the CEC bus. Disable CEC on devices you don't need it on — CEC doesn't have to be all-or-nothing.

When to contact the manufacturer

If CEC worked and stopped after a TV firmware update — with settings confirmed on — check the TV manufacturer's support forums; brands occasionally ship CEC regressions and patch them. Report it through their official support.

FoxStream publishes guides and is not an official support channel for any brand — always use the manufacturer's official support site or the number printed in your device's documentation.

Worth knowing

  • After enabling CEC, re-run the streaming remote's TV-control setup so it learns the TV again.
  • ARC/eARC audio depends on CEC in most sets — fixing CEC often fixes soundbar control too.

Common mistakes

  • Looking for 'CEC' by name on a Samsung or LG — it's Anynet+ and SimpLink there.
  • Assuming a bad remote when the whole chain just needed a power-cycle.
